A California man was killed Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle accident on the Mon-Fayette Expressway.

Robert John Bishop, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene by Washington County coroner’s office.

According to state police, the crash occurred around 8:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes near the California exit after a flock of turkeys ran into the path of traffic.

The drivers of the other vehicles, Joseph H. Impiccini, 65, of Brownsville, and Daniel B. Linden, 59, of Youngwood, were transported by medical helicopters to Pittsburgh hospitals with unknown injuries.

The crash, which shut down the northbound lanes for several hours, involved a tractor-trailer, a box truck and a car, according to the Turnpike Commission. State police are investigating.

Traffic was detoured off the expressway at the Route 40 interchange while the northbound lanes of the Mon-Fayette Expressway were closed.

Bishop is the 13th person to die in Washington County vehicle crashes this year.
