Commissioner named to national Legion posts
Washington County Commission Chairman Larry Maggi will lead three national committees for the American Legion.
Denise H. Rohan, National American Legion commander announced Maggi’s appointments after a meeting of the organization’s national executive committee in Indianapolis Oct. 12-14.
Maggi will be in charge of the Law and Order Committee, which advises the Legion on matters of policy on which to lobby Congress; the Homeland Security Committee, which formulates Legion policies which are proposed and also lobbied in Congress; and the Youth Cadet Law Enforcement Committee, which establishes camps and training for youngsters considering careers in law enforcement.
For the past 15 years, Maggi, a former state trooper, has been in charge of the Pennsylvania State Police Youth Week, a program that other states hope to emulate.
A dozen states have similar programs and he said the American Legion wants to see the effort expanded to include all 50.
Maggi said he did not apply for the appointments, but he is active on the state and local levels of the American Legion and attended the American Legion’s national convention in Reno, Nev., over the summer.
Maggi, who served on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1969 to 1972, attaining the rank of corporal. He then spent three years on inactive reserve. Attaining the rank of corporal, he participates in veterans’ organizations including American Legion Post 639 in Claysville, of which he has been a member since 1970 and an honor guard participant. He has also been a member of the Marine Corps League, Washington County Detachment 1138.
Maggi, 67, a former Washington County sheriff, was elected to the board of commissioners in 2003.
