Veterans saluted, remembered on Veterans Day

VFW Post 4793 on Lincoln Street in Waynesburg served lunch Saturday after the Veterans Day parade. Afterward, four of the oldest veterans in attendance stepped outside for a photo with the post’s World War II tank. From left, Navy Sea Bees John Mooney, 89, who served in both World War II and Korea, and World War II veterans, U.S. Army Nurse Helen “Jean” Gusic, 93, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, after World War II and U.S. Army veteran Russell Haines, 90, who was stationed after the war in the Nazi’s infamous Eagles Nest in the Alps. John Coke, 86, still fits into his Korean War Army uniform and wore it proudly in Saturday’s parade.

U.S. Marine and Army veteran Ed Debolt, left, and Vietnam veteran Rick Black, Senior Vice President of VFW 4793, got together for lunch and camaraderie at the post Saturday. DeBolt rode in the Waynesburg Veterans Parade that morning as president of the American Legion Post 816 Riders.
