McMURRAY – Those hills just keep on rolling.

Peters Township Council voted Monday night to bestow the official name of Rolling Hills Park on the municipal half of the former Rolling Hills Country Club, affirming the name that received the most votes in a recent park-naming contest.

The name “Peters Hill Park” had been bandied about, but public safety officials expressed concern about the confusion that could result from something so similar to, say, Peterswood Park or Peters Lake Park.

Other top vote-getters were McMurray Hills – which council unilaterally eliminated, on the basis of so much in the township bearing a “McMurray” designation already – and Spring Hills.

In affirming the contest winner, council members expressed amusement at some of the others entries that clearly had tongue firmly planted in cheek.

The Eminent Domain, The Upper Echelon, Peters Prep and Country, Taxpayers Park, The Tax Pit, Has To Pick One Name, Parky McParkface and The Best Park Ever! (exclamation point included).

Three variations on the name of the recently retired 35-year township manager appeared on the list of entries: Silvestri Park, Mike Silvestri Park and Michael Silvestri Community Park. He also is a longtime member of the McMurray Rotary Club, which met at Rolling Hills Country Club for 15 years prior to its closing. At any rate, no one bothered to suggest anything having to do with the venue’s original post-World War II name: Mt. Lebanon Golf Club. Confusion really would have reigned supreme.
