Washington man allegedly stabs brother at uncle’s funeral
A 22-year-old Washington man allegedly stabbed his older brother four times with a knife while they were at their uncle’s funeral Tuesday afternoon at DeAngelo Funeral Home in Washington.
Washington police said in a report that Devontye Walden, 24, of Masontown, was stabbed by his brother, Justice Walden, in the wrist, abdomen, armpit and chest after the two argued over Devontye’s decision to wear red clothing to their uncle’s funeral.
Devontye told police he wore red because his deceased uncle, Carl N. Walden Sr., had always worn red, according to police reports. But Justice allegedly said Devontye wore red to represent a gang, police said. The rest of the Walden family told police Devontye is not in a gang.
The two brothers began fighting and were eventually separated by their father, Paul Walden, police said. Devontye got into a car with his sister and realized he had been stabbed, police said. His sister drove him to an emergency room, and he was later flown by medical helicopter to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment, according to police. Devontye’s condition was not available, but police said he would survive.
“He had some pretty serious injuries,” said police Lt. Dan Stanek.
Police said there were several witnesses to the fight, but charges have not been filed. Stanek said officers need to again talk with Devontye Walden before filing charges because he was hesitant to press charges against his brother when initially interviewed.
“Unfortunately, we need the victim’s cooperation in order to prosecute,” Stanek said.
