Waynesburg U. science hall evacuated after four students sickened
Four students became ill Friday afternoon during a nursing demonstration inside Waynesburg University’s science building.
The students were taken to the university’s student health center for treatment and Stewart Science Hall was evacuated following the incident about 12:45 p.m., said Mike Humiston, the university’s public safety director.
Humiston said no chemicals or gas were released, but he did not know the nature of the “demonstration or simulation” in the class. He said it was an “isolated incident” and other students in the class were not affected.
“A number of other students were there as well, but these four were the only ones who felt sick,” Humiston said.
Stacey Brodak, vice president for institutional advancement and university relations, said the demonstration occurred in a class for nursing students.
“The students were immediately sent for evaluation to University Health Services,” Brodak said. “Out of an abundance of caution, we evacuated the building. … No issues were found, and the building was reopened.”
Waynesburg-Franklin volunteer firefighters performed an air quality check of the building and students were able to finish classes Friday.
“Everything was fine,” Humiston said. “They were transported back to their rooms and everybody is back to normal.”
