Rostraver police make arrest in hit and run accident

Rostraver Township Police have made an arrest in a hit and run accident that occurred Friday evening.

Rachel Jaszemski, 34, of Belle Vernon, turned herself in to police as a result of media reports. Jaszemski fled the scene of the accident, which occurred around 9:04 p.m. Friday, at the intersection of Route 51 and McKenery Drive, near the C. Harper Autoplex.

According to police, Jaszemski was traveling north on Route 51, driving a 2014 Ford Focus. She struck a motorcycle, which was traveling southbound, as she attempted a left turn at the intersection. The motorcycle operator, Jason Tomich, 20, of Ruffs Dale, was thrown from the bike and located approximately 70 feet down an embankment. He was extricated by emergency responders and transported to a Pittsburgh trauma center with serious injuries.

Jaszemski is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle, accidents involving death or personal injury, accidents involving damage to attended vehicle or property, prohibiting text based communications (texting while driving), and numerous other traffic offenses. She was transported to Westmoreland County prison and will be arraigned by a Westmoreland County Night Court District Judge.

The accident is still under investigation. Assisting at the scene was Rostraver Central Volunteer Fire Department.
