A South Strabane Township police detective said he is working with a police department outside Erie to try and figure out who may have stolen a food delivery truck earlier this year and then abandoned it in a motel parking lot.

Workers arriving at Schwan’s, 1700 Route 136, in the early morning hours of Feb. 12 discovered an office had been burglarized and one of the delivery trucks containing $6,500 in frozen food had been stolen from the lot.

The truck was found Feb. 20 in the motel lot in Millcreek Township, said Detective Ken Torboli. Most of the food was still inside the vehicle. Torboli said the truck has since been returned to the company. He was not sure if any of the food was salvageable.

“We are still investigating,” Torboli said, adding he is working with police from Millcreek to see if there is any video surveillance in the area where the truck was abandoned.

Police believe the truck was stolen over the weekend before the theft was discovered. Left near where the truck had been parked was a golf utility cart that had been stolen from Tower Golf and Entertainment Center, 375 Berry Road, also in South Strabane. The theft of the golf cart was also discovered Feb. 12.

Torboli said there was no evidence to make police believe the cart had been transported to Schwan’s, but rather driven from the golf center to the business. He was not sure how many miles are between the two businesses, but the route would have been a hilly one and required at least some travel along Route 136.

Also stolen from the office were wallets containing small amounts of cash used by drivers on deliveries to make change, along with a laptop computer.
