Canton man arrested on assault charges
A Canton Township man was arrested Monday on a warrant obtained by state police on charges including aggravated assault and strangulation after he allegedly choked his wife until she lost consciousness during a confrontation at their home last month.
Jonathan G. Cooper, 39, of 517 Bower Ave., also is charged with terroristic threats, simple assault, reckless endangerment and harassment in the March 18 incident.
Police were called to Washington Hospital, where his wife was being treated for her injuries. She told police she and her husband had gotten into an argument at their home.
Cooper allegedly got a blanket and used a lighter in an attempt to catch it and their home on fire. He reportedly told his wife he was going to set the fire and kill them. She was able to take the blanket and lighter from him.
The two reportedly continued to argue. Cooper allegedly attacked her from behind and wrapped his arm around her neck in a headlock. She said she was able to elbow him and break free. She went to the hospital for treatment later that day after having difficulty swallowing.
A short time later, Cooper allegedly grabbed her by the neck with his hands and squeezed until she lost consciousness.
Cooper later grabbed a knife and said he was going to stab himself, but she said she was able to wrestle the knife away from him.
Cooper was arraigned before District Judge Ethan Ward and placed in Washington County jail on $100,000 bond. He is scheduled for a May 8 preliminary hearing before District Judge David Mark.
