Washington man arrested on numerous theft charges
A Washington man wanted on numerous warrants accusing him of stealing from area stores was taken into custody Monday after he allegedly took his mother’s vehicle without her permission.
Kenneth Haskey Jr., 31, who has three different addresses in the city and Canton Township, was arrested by state police after ditching his mother’s vehicle in the city’s West End.
Police had been called to his mother’s Michael Avenue home, where she reported he stole the vehicle and $40. He was tracked down by his father to the 800 block of Ewing Street. Police said Haskey’s father used his vehicle to block the one taken by Haskey, who then ran in the direction of Jessop Place. He was eventually apprehended by state police.
Haskey was arraigned before District Judge David Mark on eight different cases of retail theft. Charges in seven of those cases were filed by South Strabane Township police.
Detective Ken Torboli filed a felony count against Haskey after he allegedly stole a diamond ring from Kay’s Jewelers at Tanger Outlets April 2 and a watch from Jared Vault, also at Tanger, March 29. On each occasion, he allegedly grabbed the jewelry from the clerk who was showing it to him and ran.
He also was charged in the April 4 theft of a tool kit and the Feb. 12 theft of a welder, both from Lowe’s in Strabane Square. He also was accused of stealing cartons of cigarettes from A-Plus Sunoco, 195 Murtland Ave., BFS convenience store, 1 Park Place, and the BP at 505 Racetrack Road.
State police charged him with stealing two cartons of cigarettes from the Exxon at 1297 W. Chestnut St., Canton, March 27.
State police charged Haskey with unauthorized use of a vehicle, flight to avoid apprehension and theft in Monday’s incident. He will be arraigned later on those charges.
Haskey was charged earlier this month by Mt. Pleasant Township police with retail theft, receiving stolen property and theft stemming from an April 1 incident. Castle Shannon police charged him with retail theft in a March 26 incident.
Haskey is scheduled to enter a plea May 29 before Judge Valarie Costanzo on charges of robbery, theft and aggravated assault for allegedly robbing a teenage clerk at Interstate Foodland, 1920 W. Chestnut St., Canton, at knifepoint on Jan. 16, 2017.
Haskey will have a hearing on the South Strabane charges May 7 before District Judge Jay Weller. He will be scheduled for a hearing before Mark on the charges filed by state police.
