A lightning strike near a house south of Waynesburg started a fire that caused extensive damage Monday afternoon. Waynesburg-Franklin volunteer firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze inside the basement of the house at 851 Sugar Run Road on the municipal line between Whiteley and Franklin township shortly after 3 p.m. Waynesburg-Franklin fire Chief Jeff Marshall said the lightning bolt hit a power line outside of the house, causing a fire to ignite in the basement and leading to extensive interior damage. No injuries were reported.
