Waterline pipe ruptures at South Hills Village mall
A waterline pipe in the second floor ceiling at South Hills Village mall ruptured Thursday afternoon, causing water to gush onto an escalator and the central atrium below, Bethel Park police said.
Police said the mall was not evacuated, but the area was cordoned off while Bethel Park firefighters investigated. Workers could be seen trying to cleaning up pools of water from the first floor below.
Shoppers apparently could smell electrical smoke emanating from the escalator, police said. It was not immediately known of the extent of water damage to the mall.No one answered a phone call to the South Hills Village management office Thursday.
