A man described by police as a suspected Chicago-area street gang member was taken into custody early Thursday by North Strabane Township police on an outstanding warrant.

He and his wife face additional charges after police said a gun was found during a search of the couple’s vehicle.

Nathaniel Jamar Trammell, 37, of Clairton, was arraigned Monday by District Judge Jay Weller on charges of person not to possess a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license and having a prohibited offensive weapon. Police also obtained a warrant for his wife, Sylvia Kaila Trammell, 33, also of Clairton, on the same charges.

Police took Nathaniel Trammell into custody during a traffic stop in the 400 block of Linden Road as a fugitive from justice. A warrant had been issued by a judge in Winnebago County, Ill., for breaking the terms of his bail, probation or parole on a charge of possession of a firearm by a gang member.

During the stop, police said both occupants of the vehicle appeared to be nervous. Nathaniel Trammell was driving, and his wife was the front-seat passenger. Police determined both were wanted on warrants. However, her warrant in Texas was non-extraditable.

Nathaniel Trammell was taken into custody on the warrant. His wife was released but reportedly refused to allow officers or the tow truck operator inside the vehicle. Police said she locked the vehicle and refused to provide the keys so it could be removed. Sylvia Trammell then walked away. The vehicle was later towed and secured.

After further review of the warrant on Nathaniel Trammell, police said they discovered he has an extensive criminal history and is a street gang member associated with “The Gangster Disciples” from near Chicago. Police learned he has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, drug violations and armed robbery.

Township police obtained a search warrant for the vehicle. A 9mm handgun with a magazine inside loaded with six rounds was found, along with a set of brass knuckles, police said. Both were accessible to the driver and passenger.

Weller set bond on Nathaniel Trammell, who had been in Washington County jail since he was taken into custody, at $25,000. He is scheduled for a Sept. 4 preliminary hearing before Weller.
