A Canton Township woman accused of stealing almost $4,500 from a Washington area Cub Scout pack while serving as its treasurer waived her case to court Tuesday.

Tonia Renee Casterline, 49, of 20 Bel Air Drive, was charged last month by state police with 28 counts of theft for allegedly stealing the money between July 2016 and August 2017.

The Cubmaster reportedly told state police she asked Casterline for the pack’s banking records, and Casterline could not or would not provide them.

The alleged theft was discovered when the Cubmaster went to Dollar Bank Sept. 21 and asked for an account balance. She was told it was $366. The Cubmaster knew there should be more money in the account and suspected there were improprieties. The leader closed the account.

Police said after getting copies of statements and canceled checks, the Cubmaster discovered Casterline wrote multiple checks and cashed them, and the money was not used for any pack purchases or activities.

Casterline reportedly told Trooper Thomas Kress, who filed the charges against her, she made the checks out to cash and endorsed them. She allegedly used the money to help pay for her family’s necessities. Casterline allegedly told Kress she would make $4,423 in restitution, but police said she has paid nothing to date.

Casterline, who is free on her own recognizance, is scheduled to be formally arraigned on the charges April 10 before Judge Valarie Costanzo.
