Police checking on the welfare of a 2-month-old child Tuesday morning resulted in the arrest of a Canton Township man at the Belvedere Acres apartment complex.

Brett Mikhail Carroll, 25, of 40 Bel Air Drive, was charged by state police with possession with intent to deliver marijuana, receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm with an altered manufacturer’s number and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police were sent to an apartment occupied by Carroll and his girlfriend after getting a report of the odor of marijuana coming from the apartment to check on the welfare of the infant that was inside.

Police said Carroll’s girlfriend opened the door and reportedly admitted to smoking marijuana before police arrived. Carroll came out of a bedroom. Police could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the bedroom and spotted a small amount of marijuana in Carroll’s pants pocket.

Police obtained a search warrant and found a Kel-Tec 9mm handgun with an obliterated serial number, a 9mm Taurus handgun that had been reported stolen and a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber handgun that had no registered owner.

Also found during the search was suspected marijuana, digital scales, smoking pipes and ammunition. Carroll reportedly told police the items belonged to him.

Carroll was arraigned before District Judge Jay Weller Tuesday night. He was released from Washington County jail after posting $10,000 bond. Carroll is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Feb. 27 before Mark.

Police did not indicate if his girlfriend will be charged.
