State police are investigating the robbery of a convenience store on West Chestnut Street in Canton Township Saturday night.

A man walked into the Exxon, 1297 W. Chestnut, about 10:20 p.m. and demanded money from the clerk. He reportedly did not show a weapon or threaten the clerk with a gun, but kept his right hand inside his pocket.

The robber refused to take any $1 bills, telling the clerk he only wanted to start with the $20 bills.

Police said the robber fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, running west on West Chestnut. He was seen on surveillance video running up the road toward the Red Roof Inn. Tracks in the snow were followed through the woods behind the motel, west along the railroad tracks to the 2300 block of The Circle, also in Canton. He then ran through a yard and onto the street, where the footprints ended.

The robber is white, about 5 feet, 5 inches, to 5 feet, 8 inches, tall with a medium build. He has a mustache and wore a dark hooded sweatshirt with red around the hood, faded denim jeans and dark sneakers with white and fluorescent green and yellow soles.

Trooper Douglas Rush does not believe there is any connection between Saturday’s robbery and three other recent ones in the last month. He said the description of the suspect does not appear to match the suspects in those robberies.

The other robberies include the Jan. 17 holdup of the 7-Eleven station almost across the street at 1360 W. Chestnut, North Franklin. South Strabane police are investigating the Jan. 19 robbery of the BP at the corner of Murtland and North avenues. State police are investigating the Jan. 22 robbery of the Dollar General on Henderson Avenue, Canton.

Anyone recognizing the robbery suspect or who has information is asked to call state police at 724-223-5200.
