Carroll zoning board votes down proposed Dollar General
A proposed Dollar General in Carroll Township has been denied a variance to be constructed in a residential area along Country Club Road.
The Carroll Township zoning hearing board denied the request from PennTex Ventures LLC of Greensburg Wednesday after a continued public hearing on the proposal. On Dec. 6, the first public hearing drew more than 50 residents who voiced opposition to the proposed store.
The proposed site was at 1226 Country Club Road (Route 88), near Mon Valley Country Club, and is zoned residential. PennTex Ventures, on behalf of Dollar General, requested a variance to rezone the site from residential to commercial. The proposed Dollar General would have also included 30 parking spaces.
Solicitor Thomas P. Agrafiotis made a motion to approve the variance, but the motion died due to lack of second. Another motion was made to deny the request, which was unanimously approved.
“Not one resident was in favor of this Dollar General in this residential area,” zoning board Chairman Marvin Batten said.
Dennis Butler, Carroll Township zoning officer, said the property is zoned residential and it cannot be used for a commercial building. A representative from PennTex Ventures would not comment on the decision.
