MONESSEN – The mayor of Monessen boycotted his sixth consecutive city council meeting Thursday, causing a large stack of unfinished business to continue to pile up in City Hall.

The absense of Mayor Matt Shorraw left city council without a quorum of three members again to hold a public meeting. Another councilman, Gil Coles, also has been missing from most council meetings.

“This meeting is closed,” Councilman Anthony Orzechowski said a few minutes after the meeting was to begin in City Hall.

Shorraw, 27, who is seven months into his first term in office, has said he would not attend a meeting until after Westmoreland County Court appoints someone to fill a vacant seat on council.

The court scheduled a hearing at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 2 to consider applications for the seat that became vacant in the May 28 death of former councilman Ron Chiaravalle.
