Two juveniles hurt in Wayne Township UTV crash
WAYNESBURG – Two juveniles were taken to an area hospital for treatment after being injured when they were ejected from a utility vehicle Thursday morning.
Emergency responders were called to Oak Forest Road just north of Bluff Ridge Road in Wayne Township around 11 a.m. following the crash.
The children, ages 10 and 14, were ejected from the UTV when it hit a guardrail, state police said at the scene. One child was thrown over the guardrail and onto a nearby embankment, police said, while the other landed in the road.
The two were flown by medical helicopters to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., for what investigators said were “severe” injuries. A crash report lists both has having suspected serious injuries.
State police said the 10-year-old boy, who was driving the vehicle, was able to speak to emergency responders at the scene, but the 14-year-old female passenger was unconscious. Investigators did not identify the two children or release their conditions.
Police are unsure how the crash occurred because no one witnessed the vehicle hitting the guardrail. The two were traveling north in the center of the road when they apparently crossed to the eastern side and hit the guardrail.
Volunteers could be seen combing through the brush of the embankment, looking for items that may have been thrown from the back of the vehicle. The vehicle, which could be seen resting against the guardrail, did not appear to be seriously damaged.
Volunteer firefighters from Wayne Township and Center Township, along with medics from EMS Southwest, assisted state police at the scene.
