Cal U. rated 13th best online college in state

California University of Pennsylvania is rated the 13th best online college in Pennsylvania, according to SR Education Group, an education research publisher based in Kirkland, Wash.

The company said it “researched every regionally accredited online college in the state, taking into account tuition and academic strength in order to determine the best value schools for students.”

Cal U., according to SR Education Group, offers online programs that lead to 74 degrees: two associate’s; 12 bachelor’s; 58 master’s; and two doctoral. There are 35 online certificate programs as well.

The top five schools in Pennsylvania are, in order: Gannon University, Misericordia University, Geneva College, Slippery Rock University and Clarion University.

  • an art studio, has opened at 22 W. Pike St., Canonsburg.

Gina and David Bottone own Drops & Swirls LLC and use a process called “artistic water transfer.” The studio employs art marbling, which involves dropping paint on liquid in a tray before using tools and techniques to create a design. That design then can be applied to scarves, linens or other objects.

  • Beef Jerky Outlet
  • has opened at Tanger Outlets in South Strabane Township.

The store offers more than 100 varieties of premium jerky, including kangaroo, alligator, venison and elk. Specialty flavors include Moonshine and Cajun. There are gourmet snacks such as popcorn, candy, jellies, jams, sauces, spices and rubs, plus dog treats.

Anthony Lingis owns the Tanger store with his wife, Karen. The Kodak, Tenn.-based company has more than 100 franchise locations.

GMS wins award

GMS Mine Repair & Maintenance, the fourth-largest employer in Greene County, has won the Governor’s Employer Award from the Pennsylvania Workforce Development Association and state Department of Labor & Industry.

The company, a leader in coal operations and contract services, is based in Waynesburg. It received the award in early May at the annual PWDA conference in Hershey.

GMS hires metalworkers, welders, machinists, coal miners, painters and general shop laborers. The Southwest Corner Workforce Development Board nominated the company.

CEO among finalists

Tim Svarczkopf, chief executive officer of Tight Rock Solutions LLC in Canonsburg, is among 30 finalists selected by Ernst & Young for Entrepreneur of the Year 2018 Award in the East Central region.

Finalists are recognized for excelling in innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities.

Award winners will be announced June 28 at the Cleveland Hilton Downtown Hotel.

This was the second year in a row a program at the South Fayette Township facility got a Best of the Best Award from Argentum (formerly the Assisted Living Federation of America).
