Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald declared a countywide disaster emergency Wednesday to help county and municipal governments continue their response to the June 20 flooding that affected several South Hills communities.

“This emergency declaration is just one step in trying to provide relief to our residents, business owners and municipalities,” Fitzgerald said.

The bulk of the flooding occurred in Bethel Park, Bridgeville and Upper St. Clair – all of which already declared their own states of emergency – along with pockets of South Park, Mt. Lebanon and Banksville.

Fitzgerald said the declaration authorizes county agencies to use all available resources and personnel as necessary to deal with the magnitude and severity of this emergency situation. Bid and contract procedures, along with other formalities required by law, are waived for the duration of the declaration. Officials from Allegheny County Emergency Services have been conducting a formal damage assessment process with the assistance of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.
