An extended school year class had to evacuate Bower Hill Elementary School Thursday morning when a large electrical panel caught fire.

Peters Township Deputy Fire Chief Mike McLaughlin said the call came in at 8:19 a.m.

“Everyone got out,” he said.

“There were maybe 10 people in the whole building.”

Shelly Belcher, communications coordinator for the district, said the class that was in session is for “a very small number” of special-needs students, who were relocated to another building.

McLaughlin said the electric company was contacted and power was cut to the building. He said the district will run emergency lights on a generator, but the building will be closed until the power is back on.

“As we work on getting it fixed, we’ve relocated that class,” Belcher said. “We’re looking at a couple weeks.”

North Strabane Township Fire Department also responded to the call.
