Bentworth student killed in crash in Somerset Township
Crisis counselors and social workers will be at Bentworth High School and at Mon Valley Career & Technology Center Monday after an 18-year-old who was a senior at the schools was killed Friday night in a one-vehicle crash in Somerset Township.
Charles “Kyle” Hook, 18, of Bentleyville, was traveling eastbound in the 400 block of Carlton Drive about 9:15 p.m. when his Volkswagen Jetta went off the right side of the road and went into a grassy field. The car rolled several times, state police said, and Hook was ejected.
Hook who was the sole occupant, was not wearing a seat belt, said Washington County Coroner Tim Warco. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy.
Counselors from the Intermediate Unit crisis team along with the school district will be at the high school at 7:30 a.m. to meet with students, said Scott S. Martin, school district superintendent.
Martin said he also talked with the director of the Mon Valley Career & Technology Center and a counselor will be at that school at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Martin said that is when Kyle would begin class each day in the automotive technology program.
The counselors and crisis team will stay in the district as long as necessary. Martin said he and Keith Konyk, high school principal, will meet with teachers and staff about 7:15 a.m. Monday before the start of class.
The Bentworth superintendent said Kyle was well-liked by fellow students. Kyle had twin brothers who are juniors, another brother who graduated in 2017 and a brother in the preschool program.
“It is a large family and have been a part of our district since Kyle was in middle school,” Martin said. “Because the family was so large, Kyle was part of a lot of people’s lives at different grade levels.”
“Kyle always wore a ball cap,” the superintendent added. “I noticed that he really grew into himself this year. He really matured over the summer and into this school year.”
The teen also was a member of Christian Assembly of God Church in Bentleyville. The church has set up an account to help pay for funeral expenses at https://christianassembly.generush.org/causes/ac6fdf01-1981-4b45-8cf1-75f4ad7d8df7.
State police said they are continuing their investigation into the accident.
Assisting were Brownsville and Bearcat EMS and firefighters from Fallowfield Township and Valley Inn.
