Man pinned in trench collapse

Emergency crews work to free a man who was trapped when a trench he was digging collapsed Sunday afternoon on Williams Street in North Franklin Township.

A North Franklin Township man was trapped from more than three hours Sunday after a trench collapsed on him.

A North Franklin Township firefighter said the man who appeared to be in his 30s was pinned against an outside brick wall of a house at 815 Williams St. after the trench collapsed about 4 p.m. Sunday.

The man was trapped five-to-six-feet deep in the trench he was digging to install drainage, according to emergency personnel. He was pulled out through a basement window.

STAT MedEvac was called to the scene. Also responding, along with North Franklin firefighters, were Peters Township Trench Rescue Team,Washington County Hazardous Materials Response Team, City of Washington Fire Department and Ambulance and Chair Service.

The man’s identity and the extent of his injuries were not known.
