The property adjacent to the former Citizen Bank and two other properties are another step closer to demolition. Monessen Council Thursday declared 550 Donner Ave. and 512-514 Donner Ave. as public nuisances and authorized the demolition and abatement of the properties. Council accepted a quote from Land Concepts Landscape and Roofing in the amounts of $42,000 and $50,000 for the demolition of the buildings. The demolition will be funded from the capital improvements money made available from the refinancing of the city’s outstanding bonds. A date has not been set for the start of demolition.

Former councilman John Nestor addressed council about taking action on Councilman Gil Coles, who hasn’t attended a public meeting since February. Nestor suggested holding the councilman’s pay. Mayor Matt Shorraw said Coles hasn’t filed any paperwork for his pay. He added that he and council have reached out to Coles several times, and Coles hopes he return.

Meanwhile, resident Adriana Ottaviani asked for the resignation of Councilman Ron Chiaravalle and solicitor Joseph Dalfonso because she was denied a seat of the city zoning board at last month’s meeting. She said her civil rights were violated because Chiaravalle stated he wouldn’t vote for anyone that owed back taxes and that she owed delinquent taxes. Dalfonso said there was no vote that night on the zoning board seat.

Council appointed Sheldon Davis to a vacant seat on the recreation board, with the term expiring Dec. 31, 2020.

A special meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday for a presentation from Centripipe regarding a method of relining sewer pipes.
