Truck overturns on I-70/79 flyover ramp at south junction
A box truck overturned on the Interstate 79 northbound/Interstate 70 westbound flyover ramp at the south junction in South Strabane Township early Tuesday and came to rest leaning on the concrete ramp wall.
The truck, hauling 42,000 pounds of steel in barrels, was going north on Interstate 79 approaching Interstate 70 west about 5:30 a.m. when the crash occurred. South Strabane Township fire Chief Scott Reese said the truck tipped onto the sidewall, but fortunately remained on the bridge.
Reese said it appears the driver was going down the ramp too fast. Firefighters had to extricate him through the windshield of the truck. Reese said the driver refused treatment.
The load on the truck remained intact and there were no hazards, Reese said. The crash caused some traffic backups during the morning rush hour but crews from Insana’s Towing were able to remove it later in the day. The crash is being investigated by state police.
