MONONGAHELA – A Monongahela gazebo whose appearance has been likened to a wedding cake is getting a new layer of “frosting.”

The gazebo in Chess Park has been the setting for hundreds of weddings. Its ornamental railings have been removed for repairs, and they will be sandblasted, powder-coated and painted white, said Rusty Polonoli, a city councilman.

“We’re sprucing it up some and trying to get it ready for the wedding season next month,” Polonoli said Thursday.

The gazebo in the park at Seventh and West Main streets was built in 1980 by Joseph Dubrovich, a contractor in nearby Rostraver Township at the time.

It has since become a popular landmark in the city that has been used for any number of public assemblies. The Monongahela Veterans Council will be opening a time capsule there during a ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m. May 28.

The city will be spending less than $5,000 to restore the gazebo, Polonoli said.

“Everything was rusted,” he said.

He said KeyBank employees will volunteer Wednesday to paint other portions of the gazebo.
