Canonsburg man accused of strangling girlfriend

A Canonsburg man was arrested Tuesday morning by Canonsburg police after he allegedly choked his girlfriend during a confrontation at their apartment.
Daniel Smith, 29, of 527 Blaine Ave., is charged with strangulation, simple assault and harassment.
Police were called about 10:45 a.m. for a report of a domestic dispute involving a woman who also tried to cut her wrists. When police arrived, they talked to the 29-year-old woman, who told them she got into an argument with Smith. She identified him as her live-in boyfriend.
The confrontation then allegedly turned physical. He reportedly told her “Why don’t you kill yourself?” The woman then cut her right wrist and forearm, police said. She reportedly had a 4-inch superficial cut on her wrist.
Smith took the knife away from her and the two again argued, police said. Smith then reportedly went behind her, put his arm around her throat and choked her, police said. She told police she thought she was going to lose consciousness.
She was able to break free but he reportedly threw her to the floor, punching her in the face, arms and ribs. Police said she had marks and scratches on her arms, bruises under her eye and on her throat and red marks on her chest.
Smith was taken into custody. Two children who were in the apartment were taken to the police station and released to their grandmother. She also took custody of two children who were in school.
The woman was taken to Washington Hospital for treatment and evaluation.
Smith was arraigned before District Judge David Mark and placed in Washington County jail on $50,000 bond. If he is released, he is not to contact the woman. He is scheduled for a June 5 preliminary hearing before Mark.
