The robbery suspect arrested last week by South Strabane Township police as a John Doe has been identified as a 24-year-old Washington man.

Damarcus Bennett reportedly refused to give his address or birth date to police or District Judge Curtis Thompson when he was taken into custody May 22 for allegedly grabbing an 18-karat gold chain from the neck of a man at Walmart, Trinity Point.

He did initially give the name Damarcus Bennett to police, but they were not able to confirm his identity. Thompson denied to grant him bond, and he was placed in Washington County jail as John Doe.

The alleged victim was able to recover the chain, but the clasp was broken. Police said Bennett was taken into custody as he tried to hide behind vehicles at a car dealership on the opposite side of Route 19.

Bennett is scheduled for a June 18 preliminary hearing before District Judge Jay Weller.
