A 16-year-old old Greene County boy was seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a one-vehicle crash in the 5400 block of Prosperity Pike (Route 18), Morris Township, Washington County.

Morris fire Chief Dave Dietrich said the boy was driving south at what appeared to be a high speed when his vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes, went off the road and struck a tree in a yard at 5428 Prosperity Pike.

“The car exploded, I’d never seen anything like that in more than 30 years,” Dietrich said. “It just exploded into pieces with the motor and transmission tearing out of the car.”

The boy, who was wearing a seat belt, Dietrich said, was helped out of the vehicle by several passersby. He was conscious and sitting on the ground near the vehicle when firefighters arrived.

Dietrich said there was a concern initially there may have been a passenger in the car. But after some searching and making telephone calls, Dietrich said it was determined the boy had just dropped his passenger at home.

The boy was taken to a Pittsburgh area hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Assisting were South Franklin Township firefighters and Ambulance and Chair personnel. State police are investigating the crash.
