Carole DeAngelo began her career where she began her life. She was hired by the Weirton Daily Times to sell advertising in 1990.

“I knew then there was ink in my blood,” she said, laughing. “I absolutely love the smell of a newspaper.”

DeAngelo eventually left that aromatic atmosphere and devoted the better part of two decades in retail management before returning to … a newspaper. She came to Observer Publishing Co. in 2014 as events manager.

“I learned that the company was considering introducing event marketing to their roster of services,” DeAngelo said. “I quickly decided I wanted to jump on board and do something that would, hopefully, benefit the community. I did a 180 and came back to the news business.”

She is still in the news business, still working in Washington, but in a different capacity for a different owner. DeAngelo, who was promoted to marketing director in 2017, is the new advertising director. Perry Nardo, regional publisher of the Ogden Newspapers, new owners of the O-R, made that announcement Monday. She succeeds Matt Miller in the position.

“We are thrilled to have Carole joining our leadership team,” said Robert Pinarski, Observer-Reporter general manager. “During her time with the Observer-Reporter, she has demonstrated the ability to implement creative marketing strategy and has developed a strong relationship with our local business community. We’re looking forward to seeing her lead our sales team and develop future successful marketing initiatives.”

DeAngelo will oversee advertising for the daily Observer-Reporter, the weekly Almanac, regional niche publications, the digital marketing agency Reimagine Main Street and event marketing.

As events manager, she was responsible for creating and coordinating events that would have regional appeal. “We decided to look for voids the community had,” DeAngelo said. “We had no auto show, a craft beer or wine festival, no kids events. We saw lot of things we could introduce to our community.”

After leaving her hometown newspaper – now also an Ogden publication – she spent 10 years at Washington Crown Center, North Franklin Township, as marketing director and then general manager. “That was my introduction to Washington County,” said DeAngelo, who lives in Canonsburg.

She then was general manager of the Galleria in Mt. Lebanon for four years, then The Waterfront in Homestead for two before joining OPC.

DeAngelo attended West Virginia University and Wheeling Jesuit University.
