Carroll Township bank robbery suspect’s charges move to Washington County Court
DONORA – The suspect in a Carroll Township bank robbery last week did not object Wednesday to forwarding her case to Washington County Court without a preliminary hearing.
Public defender Russ Korner said Angela McKinley, 40, of Donora, agreed before the hearing to have her charges held for court in the Sept. 26 robbery of a Citizens Bank branch inside a local supermarket.
District Judge Mark Wilson returned McKinley to Washington County jail without lowering her $75,000 bond that was set after police arrested her shortly after the robbery when she allegedly returned to the intersection where the bank is located.
Carroll police accused her of slipping a note demanding money to a teller at the bank inside the Fisher Heights Giant Eagle at Routes 88 and 837, and stating she had a gun. Bank officials told police McKinley was given $26,000 before she fled in a maroon Buick sedan.
Carroll police Chief Paul Brand had been given a description of the suspect and her vehicle after the 12:24 p.m. robbery when he noticed a car matching the description pulling out from Route 837 and heading north on Route 88 toward Monongahela.
He said he attempted to pull over the driver, but she sped off, only to be blocked in by other police cruisers about two miles away at the entrance to the Monongahela Bridge. Most of the money was recovered from her car, police said.
Brand said the FBI decided not to pursue federal charges against McKinley after reviewing her criminal history and concluding she did not have a weapon at Citizens Bank.
He said McKinley appeared to have been desperate for money when she decided to rob the bank, having told officers she couldn’t support her family.
McKinley sat in court Wednesday with her arms folded in her lap and her head bowed.
A group of her friends and family assembled outside the court for a brief, distant conversation with her.
“Sorry. I love you,” she said.
McKinley is charged with robbery, aggravated assault, theft, receiving stolen property, reckless endangerment and fleeing from police.
