A Washington man has been identified as the pedestrian who was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday morning at Route 19 and Weavertown Road in North Strabane Township.

Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said Matthew Joseph Smith, 59, was hit in the northbound lanes of Route 19 (Washington Road). Smith, who suffered multiple injuries, was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m.

North Strabane police Lt. Kris Wagstaff said Smith was in the right lane when he was struck. Police have impounded a vehicle that may have been involved in the crash, but no further information was available Monday afternoon.

Chief Brian Hughes said his officers did a great job collecting information at the scene.

Wagstaff said as part of the investigation, they are obtaining multiple search warrants.

The state police forensic services and accident reconstruction units are assisting in the investigation.

Warco asks that anyone who may know or be related to Smith contact his office at 724-228-6785.
