Monongahela Council approves Sheetz beer, wine sales
MONONGAHELA – Monongahela Council gave its approval Wednesday for beer and wine sales at a local Sheetz convenience store.
Council voted 4-0 on the company’s application to transfer a restaurant liquor license from Burgettstown to the store at 111 E. Main St. Councilman Ken Kulak did not attend.
The application moves to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board for final approval, Sheetz attorney Mark Kozar said at a public hearing on the application in City Hall.
The hearing prior to council’s regular meeting was absent of residents.
“No one was here to object to it,” Councilman William Polonoli said.
Kozar said the outdoor seating area at the front of the building will be enclosed to provide space for limited on-site consumption of alcohol.
“It’s a well-lit, secure place,” he said. “This is not the place where people will come, drink some beer and play a jukebox.”
A section toward the front of the store will be expanded to create a “beer cave,” a larger, walk-in cooler.
Pennsylvania Act 39 of 2016 expanded liquor license permitting, allowing stores to sell up to 3,000 bottles of wine a year for takeout, he said. Beer sales will be limited to two six-packs per customer.
Since 2016, the state has approved 800 licenses to permit beer and wine sales at grocery and convenience stores, Kozar said.
