Cecil Township man charged in tire iron attack
A Cecil Township man is in custody on accusations he struck his stepson several times in the head with a tire iron early Friday.
Cecil police charged Edward Charles Jones, 62, of 413 Bluejay Drive, with aggravated assault in the attack on Nicholas Bittner at about 2 a.m. at Jones’ home, court records show.
Police said Jones and Bittner argued over $20 Jones wanted from his stepson for driving him to Canonsburg to visit family, police stated in the affidavit.
Jones told police his stepson threw a cinder block at him, but it missed him.
Bittner was struck three or four times with the tire iron, court records allege.
Police said Bittner was found at a neighboring residence with deep lacerations to his face. He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, for treatment of his injuries. His condition was not immediately known Monday.
A search of Jones’ residence revealed a .22-caliber rifle that had been reported stolen in Waynesburg and a shotgun.
Police also charged him with illegal possession of firearms as a convicted felon. Jones has a felony trespassing conviction in 2003, police stated in court records. He also is charged with receiving stolen property.
Jones is in Washington County jail on $25,000 bond set by District Judge Larry Hopkins in Charleroi.
