Monongahela apartment damaged in fire early Monday afternoon
The state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of a fire early Monday afternoon that damaged a two-story frame building that housed several apartments.
Monongahela fire Chief Aaron Leezer said the fire started on the outside of the building at 422 Jackson St., continuing up the wall. A kitchen inside the house was also damaged. The entire building was damaged by smoke.
Leezer said crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to adjacent homes. People in a second floor apartment were able to safely get out of the building.
The fire chief said he called in the fire marshal because he was not able to determine the cause of the fire.
Leezer said the extreme heat was a concern, but they had enough manpower so none of the firefighters got overheated. Ambulance crews from Tri-Community were on the scene if needed to provide any medical assistance.
Firefighters were at the scene for about four hours. Jackson Street, which Leezer said is narrow, was closed during the firefight.
Also assisting at the scene were firefighters from New Eagle, Valley Inn and Carroll Township.
