MONONGAHELA – A house was evacuated in Monongahela Tuesday afternoon after it began to shift several inches from its foundation in what appeared to be rain-saturated soil.

Monongahela fire Chief Aaron Leezer said a resident of 509 Second St. notified emergency officials about the problem after she was unable to open a door at her home where the street meets a dead-end.

The house atop a hill appeared to have been compromised by days of heavy rain from Tropical Storm Gordon rather than underground mine subsidence, Leezer said.

He said the neighboring houses did not appear to have been damaged by the shifting soil.
