Washington man claims he was robbed, but suspects say he was not
A Washington man told city police that he was assaulted and robbed inside a home in the 1000 block of Arch Street Wednesday night but the two men he identified as the robbers said that is not what happened.
The 31-year-old man told police that he was walking in the 1000 block of Arch Street after 9 p.m. when he was approached by two black men wearing red shirts. He described one as being heavyset and the other tall and skinny. The two men allegedly shoved the victim and dragged him into a nearby house. They reportedly told him they wanted his belongings, stole an iPhone 8, debit card and $160 and forced him out of the house. He walked to the 1200 block of Donnan, where he called police.
Police tried to locate the man’s cellphone, but they could not because the device had been turned off. Officers took the man back to the area so he could point out the house. They saw two men fitting the description sitting on the front porch of a home. The man identified them as the ones who assaulted and robbed him.
The two alleged suspects had a bag of marijuana between the two of them along with a wad of money. Police did a sweep of the house and found $184. The cellphone and debit card were not found.
The two told police that the man came to the house to purchase narcotic pills, but he was told they had none. They reportedly invited him to “hang out.” They told police that he briefly went inside the house, but then left.
The investigation was turned over to the detective unit.
