Smith police arrest Langeloth man on assault, theft charges
A Langeloth man was arrested Saturday night by Smith Township police after he allegedly ran after a vehicle with three men inside and fired shots from a handgun he was carrying.
Daniel James Law, 22, of 101 Eleanor St., is charged with aggravated assault, theft, receiving stolen property, possession of paraphernalia, having a prohibited offensive weapon, reckless endangerment and prohibited discharge of a firearm.
Police were called about 8:30 p.m. to 318 E. Third St. for a report of a theft and shots being fired. A 23-year-old Smith man told police he came home and discovered his dirt bike was stolen from his porch. A neighbor reportedly saw two men and a woman walking down the street with the dirt bike. Police said another neighbor helped located the dirt bike in the yard at Law’s home.
The owner of the dirt bike confronted Law and loaded the dirt bike into the back of a pickup truck as Law went inside his house. As the owner of the dirt bike was leaving in the vehicle with his father and brothers, Law allegedly came back out of the house, began running down the street after the truck and shot at the vehicle.
Police said Law admitted to taking the dirt bike but told police he and a friend had purchased it several years ago. Law claimed the friend sold the dirt bike without his knowledge. Law also reportedly said he was firing the gun in the air and not at the pickup truck.
Police said they learned from Law’s cousin the gun that was used is owned by her boyfriend.
Law was arraigned before District Judge Joshua Kanalis and placed in Washington County jail on $35,000 bond. He is scheduled for an Oct. 11 preliminary hearing before District Judge Gary Havelka.
