MONONGAHELA – An electrical fire earlier this month darkened the decorative streetlights in downtown Monongahela.

The cause of the Sept. 11 fire in an above-ground box at Fourth and Main streets was unknown, city police Chief Brian Tempest said Wednesday.

“The fire department brought out light standards,” Tempest said.

He said a police officer noticed smoke filtering out of the box and called the city’s fire department to the scene.

The fire caused the light failures on the metal poles that are reproductions of old gas lamps from Second to Fifth streets.

Tempest said he added two foot patrols of the area because of the darkness.

The repair work was expected to cost $3,800 and begin Wednesday.
