Slovaks gather Saturday for ‘Septemberfest’ food and music
This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the founding of Czecholslovakia under what is known as the Pittsburgh Agreement, and the National Slovak Society Heritage Museum will celebrate it with Septemberfest Saturday in McMurray.
There will be pottery crafting and dumpling making at the society’s museum, 351 Valley Brook Road, home of NSS Life.
To kick off “Blessings in a Backpack” week, a basket auction will raise funds for the program that provides nourishment for school children during weekends.
There will be a cooking demonstration of potato dumplings, known as bandurkovo halušky, and food for sale.
Festival-goers will also have the chance to create an imitation of one of Slovakia’s most sought after famous ceramic goods, floral modra pottery.
A Slovak marketplace will offer a selection of handmade gifts, and the Pittsburgh Slovakians will perform.
The five-hour event opens at 11 a.m. Parking is available next door at Jordan Tax Service, 102 Rahway Road.
