Citing concerns about the danger a building presented to residents and property, Monessen council approved emergency demolition at a special meeting Friday.

The building, at 279 Schoonmaker Ave., formerly served as a firemen’s social hall.

The city has placed barricades around the house, but councilman Anthony Orzechowski said the structure is in danger of collapsing on a neighboring building, Mon Valley Phone Repair.

“There’s concern about the building collapsing and falling on the other building, and it’s a danger to the public,” said Orzechowski.

The board also authorized WEC Inc. to prepare plans, specifications, bid documents and permits necessary, and to advertise for bids.
