Washington School Board is looking for a new member following the resignation of board veteran John Campbell.

Campbell announced he was going to step down at the school board’s Sept. 17 meeting, and the board formally accepted Campbell’s resignation at a special meeting Monday afternoon. Campbell had been on the nine-member school board for 11 years.

The board will appoint a replacement. Residents who live within the school district can submit letters of interest at the district’s administrative office at 311 Allison Ave. The board will appoint a new member next month, and whoever is chosen will serve out the remainder of Campbell’s term, which expires in 2019.

Jeffrey Fine, president of the school board, praised Campbell for his years of service.

“He’s brought a lot to the district,” Fine said. “He was a part of everything.”

Fine also said the board would recognize Campbell’s contributions to the district “at a later time.”

At the meeting, the school board also accepted the resignation of Mary Grace Stutzman, principal of Washington Junior High School, who had been with the district for 21 years. Stutzman has accepted a job in Ringgold School District.
