A Fayette County Walmart may be the first Walmart in Pennsylvania to sell beer and wine in their stores.

A representative with Walmart confirmed that the company has bid on the license to sell liquor at the South Union Township location.

“We want Walmart customers in Fayette County to save money so they can live better,” said Jason Klipa, Walmart’s Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations in Pennsylvania. “We are excited to take this first step toward giving them a convenient and affordable way to buy beer and wine.”

According to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, the company bid $65,000 on the license during an auction last month.

PLCB Spokesman Shawn Kelly said Walmart was the highest bidder for an available license out of Redstone Township, which means the company can now apply for a liquor license.

As for a timeline and the process of obtaining the license, Kelly said every application is different, every application is thoroughly investigated and there is no timetable for a decision.

“Some applications are very complete, some applications are very complex, so there is no standard timetable,” Kelly said. “PLCB processes every application as quickly and as thoroughly as it possibly can.”

Walmart representatives also confirmed that if the license is approved, the South Union location will be the first Walmart in Pennsylvania to have liquor sales.

Representatives added that the store in South Union was selected because the company saw it as a great opportunity to serve those customers, and the company is still in the planning process regarding the type of selections that could be sold.

A Walmart representative also stated the company intends to take every necessary precaution to comply with state law and to provide customers with a safe shopping experience.
