Macri arraigned on assault charges; preliminary hearing scheduled
A former PIAA wrestling champion who was shot by police after allegedly aiming an AR-15 at officers was released from the hospital and arraigned Thursday evening.
Logan Bradley Macri, 19, of 427 W. McMurray Road, North Strabane, was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct before District Judge Larry Hopkins.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. May 7 at district court in North Strabane Township.
Macri was placed in Washington County jail but released after posting his $100,000 monetary bond.
Macri is being represented by attorney Casey David White, who said Friday that Macri was struck four times, once in the right hand, once in the right foot and twice in the right buttocks. White said the shot to Macri’s hand caused “significant injuries.”
“We’re still gathering facts as to what exactly happened,” White said.
According to White, there are “a lot of different perspectives” from those who witnessed the shooting. He also claimed that Macri’s weapon was not loaded.
“What has become clear is Mr. Macri did not intend to harm officers. The weapons were not loaded. There was no ammunition to be found on Mr. Macri. That goes further to show the point that he did not have any malicious intent,” White said.
White described Macri as being “apologetic” that he placed the officers in that position.
He added that Macri is going through “rehabilitation” in order to “make himself a better person and to move forward from this incident.”
“He is hoping the criminal justice process will shed some light that there was never any ill will towards law enforcement,” White said.
Police were dispatched to Macri’s residence about 2:30 a.m. April 14 following a report of a domestic assault.
According to the criminal complaint, Macri’s mother had contacted police after he threatened her and others with a firearm. The complaint states that Macri struck his mother with a handgun and a sword.
Three police officers arrived at the scene, two from North Strabane and one from Canonsburg. Though the complaint says Macri initially complied with police instructions in the driveway, as they began to approach he is accused of picking up the AR-15 and pointing it at officers.
According to the complaint, all three officers fired their weapons and struck Macri multiple times.
In March 2018, Macri won the PIAA Class AAA 120-pound title at Giant Center in Hershey for Canon-McMillan High School. He was a four-time state qualifier and WPIAL champion with a career record of 152-30.
