A Washington man was killed in a single-vehicle accident Saturday in Canton Township.

Patrick J. Hughes, 35, died following a crash that occurred shortly before 11 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene an hour later by Washington County Coroner Tim Warco.

Warco said the victim was not wearing a seat belt.

Hughes, according to the coroner, was the driver and sole occupant of a vehicle that was heading west on West Chestnut Street (Route 40), when he lost control at the intersection with Roosevelt Street, went up an embankment and hit a tree. Warco said the victim was ejected from the vehicle and trapped beneath it.

The cause and manner of death were pending. State police are investigating.

Ambulance and Chair Service and the Canton and North Franklin fire departments responded.
