A driver led police on a chase Saturday night through the western edge of Washington County and part of the neighboring West Virginia panhandle following an attempted traffic stop in Burgettstown.

Police Officer Ryan Drohn of McDonald Police Department said the chase started about 9:30 p.m. when he tried to pull a vehicle over near the intersection of Bridge Street and Route 18.

Drohn said the driver, whom he described as an adult man, led members of law enforcement through Hanover Township and “a couple times” wound up in West Virginia, whose state police picked up the chase there. Drohn said the chase concluded without police apprehending the driver.

By then, he had already fallen off and Pennsylvania state troopers had taken the lead.

“We just broke it off,” he said. “Once we got an ID on him, we just broke the pursuit off.”

Drohn said charges are pending against the driver, whose name he did not release the following evening.
