Monongahela council to vote on yard waste ordinance
MONONGAHELA – City residents may soon face a fine for improperly disposing yard waste.
Solicitor Todd Pappasergi said Monday he will be presenting the first reading of a new ordinance at council’s regular meeting on Wednesday. According to Pappasergi, the ordinance will give the city the ability to cite residents who put out bagged grass, leaves, flowers and tree limbs for garbage pickup.
Street foreman Mark Gadd said residents can drop off clippings in a disposal bin at the city’s public works department.
Gadd added that Monongahela is applying for a state Department of Environmental Protection grant to purchase equipment to recycle yard waste. However, the city must first have an ordinance in place to qualify for a grant.
“This is something that the DEP requires,” said Councilman Ken Kulak, during the council’s workshop meeting Monday. “Plus, we don’t want to overburden the city’s sanitation site with all this yard waste.”
Council members are expected to vote on the ordinance during the March meeting.
In other business, Gadd said the city is planning to start repair work this summer on portions of 12th, Lincoln and Sampson streets. The city will use liquid fuels funds and some money left over from last year’s budget to pay for the repairs.
Council also announced that the annual Pooch Parade will be held May 11.
