More than 100 families in Canonsburg are without heat and gas service, after a gas leak was discovered Monday.

Stephen Hall, executive director of the Washington County Housing Authority, said they were notified of an odor of gas near the intersection of Valley Road and Dawson Street, where the Valley View Terrace housing units are.

“The gas company determined there was a gas leak and they would have to turn the gas service off,” Hall said.

Columbia Gas also told authority officials that since the leak appeared to be on the authority’s side of the meter,it would be responsible for any repairs. The authority contracted with Nevaeh Pipe Bursting of Normalville to find the leak and repair it.

“The contractor arrived with equipment this morning and should be digging as we speak,” Hall said Tuesday. “I’m hoping this will be repaired by this afternoon, but it depends on what they find and what it will take to repair it.”

Hall said more than 100 families’ homes were affected as well as the Head Start building, which canceled classes Tuesday.

The authority is rounding up all the space heaters in its inventory to give out the people while the repairs are done. Hall said anyone with a compromised immune system or particular sensitivity to the cold will have priority when distributing the heaters.

“We’re giving our best effort to try to get this repaired as quickly as possible,” he said.
