MONESSEN – A former member of the U.S. Marine Corps who was appointed last year to fill a vacant seat on Monessen Council has announced his candidacy for councilman in the spring primary.

David Feehan, 33, will appear on the Democratic ticket in May for the two-year term on council that will expire at the end of the year.

Council unanimously appointed him in January 2018 to fill the council seat, one of two that were won by Anthony Orzechowski, who chose the four-year term and now is serving as acting mayor.

“Growing up in Monessen and now returning to this city after my Marine Corps service ended has been an eye opener,” Feehan said.

The city has been overwhelmed with blight decades after the local steel mill closed. The city’s new young mayor, Matt Shorraw, has disappeared from City Hall for a variety of reasons, one of which involve his feeling uncomfortable around Feehan and Orzechowski.

“Things have changed in this town and I would like to continue to offer my enthusiasm, organizational skills and professional expertise to support the city of Monessen, the people, the police force and the City Council in leading Monessen into the future,” Feehan stated in a news release.

He served in the military for eight years and now works in cybersecurity for a global manufacturing company.

He said the three-member team on council has been successful in getting a $150,000 emergency demolition grant for a dilapidated building at 279 Schoonmaker Ave., and are coordinating with the Pennsylvania National Guard for help in dealing with blight.

Feehan and his wife, Kari Ann Barthels Feehan, are the parents of two children.
